A question for you medicos

Why do doctors and HMOs not encourage patients/members who fit the allowed donor profile to donate blood? We’ve learned when medical folks ask about smoking and other health concerns, it pays off. Well, the chronic continual recurring (and worsening) blood shortage is a health concern—a huge health concern if you’re planning on having a serious accident or being involved in a massive disaster any time soon …. oh, that’s right, nobody plans those things … guess that means we have to have a good blood supply ALL THE TIME … And in these days of tattoo-mania, mad cow, AIDs, rampant over-reliance on prisons (whence a good bit of our newly returning epidemics fester and grow stronger), fewer and fewer people are even eligible to donate, making identification of those who ARE eligible even more important.
Seems like the medical folks might, you know, like maybe have a role here.
So how about it? Anyone care to set me straight, let me know that at their clinic they’ve been helping people understand the importance of donating blood for years and making sure that all eligible donors (esp. O Negative universal donors) know the reasons that blood donations are so important . . .
