A Step in the Right Direction

Oregon’s target of 75% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is a step in the right direction. The principal problem is that it falls short of what the best science is saying we have to do (80%) to have better than a 50-50 chance of preventing dangerous climate destabilization.

The other problem is that the rich countries, the ones that have put most of the greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, must do MORE than the average required cut of 80%, or else the developing countries in Africa and Asia would have to reduce their emissions starting today. That would mean accepting permanent grinding poverty, which is why it is unrealistic.
