The high raptor mortality at Altamont Pass Wind Farms was an indication of how important environmental protocol can be. The wind turbine technology used at the time was also a factor. Improved mechanical design, along with a better understanding of siting issues, will minimize the ecological footprint of future renewable energy systems, and also reduce noise and visual impact.
