Make some noise against global warming

Today while walking up SE Hawthorne in Portland, I was greeted on the sidewalk by Dylan, who works against global warming by working for Greenpeace. Dylan tells me there’s a global warming gathering that Portland-area OnwardOregonians might like to know about, coming up this weekend.

+ Saturday, Nov 3, from 2-4 p.m. Greenpeace is hosting a gathering of concerned citizens in Gabriel Park in Multnomah Village. The Safe Climate Act, now being considered in the U.S. House, has about 140 congresspeople behind it. Here’s information on the Safe Climate Act, from the website Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility.

H.R. 1590 Safe Climate Act

A bill to prevent average global temperatures from increasing more than 3.6° F (2° C) above pre-industrial levels. The bill would achieve this goal by establishing a long-term framework to gradually reduce global warming emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.  Specifically, the bill would freeze emissions in 2010, reduce emissions by roughly two percent each year from 2011-2020 and by five percent each year from 2021 through 2050.  The 80 percent reduction goal is consistent with the 75-85 percent reduction targets adopted by several states, including California, New Mexico, and six New England states. Sponsored by Rep. Henry Waxman D-California. Referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Chairman Joe Barton R-Texas.  Sponsored locally by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Rep. DeFazio and Rep. Wu

But our own Congresswoman Darlene Hooley, says Dylan of Greenpeace, has not yet supported it. This can be corroborated on this government website, if it’s up to date: Library of Congress.

To show community concern for the Safe Climate Act, citizens can make some noise in Hooley’s own district in the park on Saturday.
