Reinventing the Wheel

In the U.S., about 1.2 billion gallons of fuel are wasted every year from driving on underinflated tires, according to this government report. With oil prices soon to reach $100 a barrel, lack of basic auto maintenance is costly and will increase harmful exhaust emissions. Just in time, a new innovation from Michelin will make pneumatic tires a thing of the past. The new airless design uses an internal ribbed structure to create the feel of an air-filled tire. No more flat tires, no dangerous blowouts, and no under-inflation.

The tires are engineered for optimum rolling efficiency and performance. Now what we need is a good airless tire for bicycles! For more information, the DOE’s fuel economy website is well worth a visit.
