Sidewalk people and social injustice

Life is either light or dark. The other night, my therapy-dog-in-training Conor and I walked the main boulevard near my Portland house and got to see what street people see: social injustice. You’re either in or you’re out. At least eight people along the 10-block stretch sat on the cold sidewalk outside busy, well-lit, Friday-night-crowd restaurants. The sidewalk people each had one of the following: 1) a musical instrument; 2) an arrangement of homemade things on cloth; or 3) an outstretched hat. I can`t say yes to everyone who asks, can I? But most of the people last night didn`t ask me for money. They did ask to touch Conor, and he obliged with an open heart and eager tail. Here`s what I`m thinking I could do. (It`s not much, but it`s food.) I could always bring along a few packages of crackers and cheese as I walk that street of dreams.
