BlueOregon has a post about the latest attempt to throw tax dollars at the wrong people working on the wrong part of the wrong problem statement.

Meanwhile, we still have a few remaining shards of a once-proud (and widely envied) rail system that haven’t completely decayed — oops, wait, there goes another piece in SW Washington!

There was a brilliant Tom Toles cartoon some years ago that’s fitting here — it shows voices from the US Capitol dome, saying things like “War for Oil,” ” Climate in crisis,” “Funding terrorism,” “Choking pollution,” and then the next to last panel says “All serious problems that we must deal with ….” and the last panel shows a voice saying “as soon as we finish defunding Amtrak.”

Imagine what would happen if we took all the money we’ve poured down the agro-fuels rathole and spent it on trying to bring our rail system up to the level of, oh, say Slovenia.
