Taking action through Onward Oregon

oregon If you’re like myself, you’re signed up with a bunch of organizations like MoveOn, the Natural Resources Defense Council, People For the America Way… that all have e-mail action campaigns, which has the result of filling up your e-mail box with campaigns every week. With so much at stake these days, it’s certainly not a surprise. All of these groups have a national reach, making it easy to organize action at a national level.

But what about the state level? That’s where Onward Oregon comes in. It’s kind of like the local equivalent of a MoveOn in that it addresses a plethora of issues, but it does so at the local level, the level that could be considered the petri dish of political movement and action. With that in mind, when my mail box is overflowing with action items, OO’s are always the first actions I take if I have little time.

If you’re a member of OO, you’re aware that OO isn’t sending out action items every week. It’s an organization that picks its issues carefully and doesn’t want to overwhelm its members with daily e-mails that eventually get ignored. So when an OO action appears in your mail box from “The Gang at Onward Oregon”, it’s one that has had a lot of time and consideration put into it.

Currently there are two actionable action items that you can act on:

1. Keep dioxins out of Oregon.

2. Urge Oregon’s federal delegation to support Feingold Iraq exit strategy

If you’re not yet a member, you can become one through taking action on the two items above, or you can sign up here.

The cool thing about OO’s actions is that they work! Recently the city of Gresham turned down a Wal-Mart proposal that OO and Gresham First opposed in a coordinated campaign:

Over 450 Onward Oregon members sent comments to the City of Gresham expressing concern over Wal-Mart’s proposed development. Gresham officials stated that they had never seen so many comments from the pulic on any issue. Thanks in part to your action, the City of Gresham has decided to deny Wal-Mart’s application.

How great is that! Read more about past successful OO action campaigns here and join together with other OO members today to be a part of this successful, local net-roots organization.
